The rapidly growing availability of massive amounts of data leads to several opportunities. Among others, “Big Data” can assist companies in developing new business fields. This raises the question of how German small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can expand their existing portfolio by data-based business models, in order to create added value for potential customers.
The project “BigDieMo”, which was launched on the 1st of October 2015 with a term-time of 3 years, is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the subsidy ID 01FJ15087. It answers the proposed question by developing a systematic toolbox in order to design data-based services. This box will enable SMEs to generate novel business models. Thereby, we will estimate what kinds of data-based business models SMEs can adapt.
- Capturing current data-based business models and developing a framework for the existing models,
- inquiring innovation needs in enterprises by primary data acquisition through interviews and workshops,
- and developing and piloting a toolbox consisting of methods and instruments to design a data-based business model.
